Brahmin sangha gives gift to 40 families

SPREADING HAPPINESS: Gulbarga District Brahamin Sangha functionaries distributing free clothes and sweet boxes among the poor on the occasion of Deepavali in Gulbarga on Sunday.

GULBARGA: The gesture of the Gulbarga District Brahmin Sangha of gifting new clothes and sweets to the poor has brought cheers to the beneficiaries for whom celebrating the Deepavali festival was out of question because of the rising cost of living.

The sangha, which had a practice of selecting the poorest among the poor in the community for gifting a pair of dhotis saris, and shirt pieces, along with a box of sweets to enable them to celebrate the festival of lights for the past five years, this year gave away the clothes and sweets to more than 40 families in the city at a function here on Sunday.

A blessing

For many like Laxmibai, a housewife in Brahmpur locality, the gift has come as a blessing. "We had given up hope of celebrating the Deepavali this year wearing new clothes. We had no source of any income to purchase new clothes or preparing sweets," she said. "Now at least we can wear new clothes if not celebrate the festival with pomp," she added.

The sangha has decided to broad base its Deepavali gifts to the poor families by including more number of beneficiaries and also include the crackers and the dress material for children from next year.

The sangha has been giving away Deepavali gift to the poor families by collecting donations both in the form of cash and dress material.
