Refuge for the destitute

Facilities to earn livelihood

THRISSUR: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said that centres for the destitute persons suffering from various forms of disabilities will be started soon at six locations in the State.

Inaugurating the Centre for Disabled started by the Bethesda Charitable Trust at Puthoor near here on Saturday the Minister said the destitute centres to be started under the Social Welfare Department would be open to both men and women. The centres to be christened as `Janakshemakendrams' will have various facilities for enabling its inmates to earn a livelihood for themselves. Each centre would be housed in a 20-acre plot and the inmates would be able to earn the income to support themselves by starting some production units and agricultural activities in the centres.

The Government would support the centre for two-and-a-half years and by then they were expected to become self-supportive, the Minister said.

The centres would also have facilities for relaxation and entertainment of the inmates. Each centre is estimated to cost Rs.3.5 crore. The centre in Thrissur district would become operational in December at Koratty, she said.

Rehabilitation

Ms. Sreemathy said a refuge and rehabilitation centre for helpless women and mothers would be set up in Koratty within a year. The facility would cost of Rs.5 crore.

She was inaugurating the `Ammaveedu' programme organised as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Janaseva Sishu Bhavan, Aluva, on Saturday.

The Government would take steps within two years to help all children in the streets, she added.
