Anandakrishnan panel report soon

CHENNAI: The Prof. M. Anandakrishnan committee that was constituted to suggest ways to the Government to do away with the entrance examination system for professional courses is likely to submit its report this week.

The committee was asked to suggest alternative methods for making admissions. The entrance examinations were considered tough both financially and academically for rural students in the State, especially those who had little access to costly coaching centres.

The committee that included administrators and academicians held three founds of public discussions in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai to elicit views from different stake-holders especially parents, students and teachers.

Prof. Anandakrishnan said the report was ready and he had sought a suitable time from the Chief Minister for submitting it. — Special Correspondent

Four struck dead by lightning

Nagercoil: Four persons including a student of a private engineering college at Kumarakovil were killed on the spot and five others sustained burn injuries when lightning struck them on Sunday while they were playing Kabaddi in a playground.

According to police sources, the district witnessed heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder. Some persons were playing Kabaddi in a Government higher secondary school at Nithravilai near Thoothur, when lightning struck them. Of the four dead, only two were identified as Thavamani (23), engineering college student and Logi Dhas (35), a coolie of Nithravilai.

Governor, Rangasamy greet Vice President

Puducherry: Lt. Governor of Puducherry Mukut Mithi has greeted Vice President Bairon Singh Shekhawat on the latter's birthday on Monday.

In his greetings, the Lt Governor, referred to the latter's long political career, and said Mr. Shekawat had also rendered distinguished service as Vice President of the country. Mr. Mithi wished Mr. Shekhawat a healthy life for many more years of distinguished service to the nation.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy, in his greetings, said Mr. Shekhawat had by his distinguished service raised the status of the country and patriotic zeal and straightforwardness had been his hallmarks. — Special Correspondent

Training for vocational teachers

VELLORE: Twentyeight vocational teachers from higher secondary schools in Tamil Nadu and eight from Karnataka participated in a five-day training programme for Capacity Building of Teachers Teaching Vocational Subjects to SC/ST Students organised jointly by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and Pandit Sundarlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education in Bangalore recently. According to a release, the programme covered topics such as providing on-the-job training to the vocational students during their period of study on the premises of the employers at least for four weeks and efforts aimed at employment opportunities for the SC/ST students. — Special Correspondent

ERODE: A commemoration parade was taken out on Saturday at Erode District Police Office in memory of police personnel who died in duty. Sonal V. Misra, Superintendent of Police and many police officers placed wreath and paid their respects to the deceased. - Staff Reporter

Woman killed

NAMAKKAL : A 32-year-old woman was killed and two others injured when the moped on which they were travelling collided with a lorry on Sunday.

The police said that the deceased was Selvi, wife of Ramar of Bodinaickanpatti. Mr. Ramar and son Ashokumar have been admitted to Government Hospital here.

Beaten to death

SALEM: A 52-year-old man was reportedly murdered in Aattaiyampatti near here recently.

The police said Thangaraj of Mettukadai was reportedly beaten to death by his neighbour Venkateshwaran (26) following a land dispute between them.

Fire accident

TIRUNELVELI : Some computers, several documents and furniture in the Divisional Office of Life Insurance Corporation at Palayamkottai were reduced to ashes as a fire broke out in the office on Saturday night. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel extinguished the fire. Electrical short circuit is said to be the reason for the accident.

Youth murdered

TIRUNELVELI : The Perumalpural police are looking for a youth, who had allegedly murdered another youth.

The police said Prince of Perumalpuram and his friends were playing cricket. As one Venkatesh of Perumalpuram and his friends crossed the ground, Prince attacked Elayaperumal (26), a friend of Venkatesh. Elayaperumal died in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

Posts allocated

Nagercoil : The Democratic Progressive Alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M. Karunanidhi has allocated the chairmen posts of Colachel and Padmanabhapuram municipalities to DMK, Nagercoil municipality to the Congress and Kuzuthurai to Communist Party of India (Marxists).

Road picketing

THENI : A section of people in Kullapuram panchayat picketed Andipatti-Periakulam main road here on Sunday demanding the release of persons who were arrested on the charges of group clash. A total of 16 persons from the two groups were arrested.

Jothi Ammal, belonging to Kuravar community, had won the election by garnering more than 2,700 votes. Her nearest rival got 337 votes only.

The police said supporters of Pandiammal, another candidate who was defeated in the election, had clashed with supporters of Jothi Ammal. Supporters of Pandiammal demanded the release. — Staff Reporter

AIR programme

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi station of the All India Radio (AIR) will broadcast a phone-in programme at 1 p.m. on October 23. Cardiologist, V. Vasudevan of Thanjavur will clear the doubts of listeners on heart ailments. The listeners could call 0431-2416888 to take part in it, a press release of the station director of the AIR issued here said.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level at the Mettur Dam stood at 93.01 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 6,412 cusecs and the discharge, 4,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
