CHENNAI: The winning candidates of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the elections for the Chennai Corporation, along with their supporters, called on party president and Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi and sought his blessings on Sunday. Jubilant DMK activists swarmed Arivalayam, the party headquarters, to greet the newly elected councillors. The winners, who visited the DMK office in batches, presented shawls to Mr.Karunanidhi, party general secretary K.Anbazhagan, deputy general secretary M.K.Stalin and treasurer Arcot N.Veerasamy. Mr.Karunanidhi, in a poem titled, "Service to People is Service to God," said the electoral victory had come as a mark of recognition to the Government's performance. He referred to various schemes implemented by the DMK Government such as waiver of farm loans, reduction in the price of rice supplied through the public distribution system, distribution of colour TVs, handing over of wasteland to the landless peasants, restoration of the marriage assistance scheme, disbursal of doles for the educated unemployed youth, re-introduction of the system of counselling for transfer of teachers and enhancement of old age pension. If the party continued to serve the public, it would be able to win the people's support, besides achieving greater victories, Mr.Karunanidhi said in his poem. Elected candidates belonging to the allies of the DMK including the Communist Party of India also called on Mr.Karunanidhi at Arivalayam.
AIADMK nominees
The elected nominees of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam S.Bhuvaneswari, M.N.Sundaramurthy and M.Krishnan visited their party headquarters and met some of the party functionaries.
