PAYING OBEISANCE: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy pays homage on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day in Puducherry on Saturday.
Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Police G. Vasudeva Rao and Senior Superintendents of Police Chhaya Sharma and Sindhu Pillai, Additional SSP B. Srikanth and host of other police officials paid homage at the Police Martyrs' Memorial at Gorimedu on the occasion of the Police Commemoration Day here on Saturday. Earlier the IG of Police read out the details of police personnel who laid down their lives in the service of the nation in different parts of the country during the current year (2006). He said that with an increasng threat to internal security, the job of policeman was becoming highly stressful and hazardous. Consequently the number of policemen dying in harness had also considerably increased since 1959. Mr. Kishan Kumar said that a total of 676 personnel died while on duty during current year. There was an imperative need to review and improve the gadgetry, weaponry, training and tactics so as to develop their ability to come out of hazardous situation with minimum losses, the IGP said. Silence was observed for a couple of minutes in memory of the policemen who laid down their lives to prevent the activities of terrorists and anti-national forces.
