`Kittur Utsav 2006' begins today

It is being held to showcase Rani Chennamma's role in the freedom struggle

  • Seminars, contests, cultural programmes to be held

    Belgaum: "Kittur Utsav 2006" will begin at the fort of Rani Chennamma in Kittur of Bailhongal taluk on Monday.

    The two-day event is being organised by the Kittur Utsav Samiti to pay homage to Rani Chennamma and showcase her role in the freedom struggle.

    Competitions

    Seminars and various competitions will be held as part of the event.

    Cultural programmes will be held at the "Veer Rani Kittur Chennamma Vedike" on the fort premises.

    Puja

    The event will begin with a puja at the "samadhi" of Rani Chennamma at Bailhongal in the presence of Gangadhara Swamiji of Moorusaveera Math at 8 a.m.

    `Kittur Jyoti'

    Jagdeesh Metgud, MLA, will flag off a procession in which "Kittur Jyoti" will be brought to the venue.

    At Kakti near Belgaum, Rachaiah Swamiji and Uday Swamiji will offer puja to Rani Chennamma's statue at 9 a.m. in the presence of Abhay Kumar Patil, MLA, and former Mayor Siddangouda Patil.

    The "Kittur Jyoti" will be accorded a grand reception at Kittur Circle in Kittur town by Minister for Horticulture Shashikant A. Naik at 11 a.m.

    `Janapada Vahini'

    Anant Kumar Hegde, MP, will inaugurate the colourful "Janapada Vahini" at 11.30 a.m.

    Union Minister for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan will inaugurate the utsav at 5 p.m.

    The acting Chairman of the Legislative Council, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti, Social Welfare Minister Balachandar Jarkiholi, Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik, and Leader of the Opposition in the Council H.K. Patil will participate in the function.

    Former Minister D.B. Inamdar will inaugurate the cultural programmes.

    Artistes from Belgaum, Dharwad, Bagalkot and Uttara Kannada districts will give performances.

    Seminar

    A seminar on Kittur will be held on the museum premises at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

    Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will participate in the valedictory function to be held at 4 p.m.

    Chennabasava Swamiji of Madiwaleshwar Math at Garag will participate in the function.

    Deputy Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh has promised to organise the event in a grand manner.
