TUMKUR: Tumkur MP S. Mallikarjunaiah and legislators S. Shivanna (Tumkur) and H. Ningappa (Kunigal) paid rich tributes to policemen who were killed while on duty, at a function organised to mark Police Commemoration Day here on Saturday. Mr. Mallikarjunaiah hailed the services and sacrifices made by policemen. "We have a duty to look after their families. Society and the Government must join hands in this direction," he said. Mr. Ningappa said that the Centre and State governments should prepare a plan for the welfare of families of the policemen killed while on duty.
Concern
Mr. Shivanna said last year nearly 600 policemen were killed while on duty and this year, the number had increased by 100. "This is a matter of serious concern. We cannot afford to sacrifice trained personnel this way," he added. "Governments must accord priority to build a strong intelligence wing so that all troubles could be nipped in the bud," Mr. Shivanna said. P. Harishekaran, Superintendent of Police, welcomed the gathering, and read out the names of policemen who were killed while on duty.
