Donation of bodies

CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu has recently opined that special organisations are needed to take up the cause of `body donations' as being done in West Bengal. While it is good to know that political parties are supporting the cause of `body donations', it must be mentioned here that `body donations' are already going on as a movement.

The Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical sciences and Research Foundation and Siddhartha Medical College have got five bodies each from some donors, while many others have given their consent. Even women are coming forward to donate their bodies.

Gas consumers' woes

Consumers of cooking gas are again facing the problem of supply of cylinders, as dealers are insisting on submission of ration card. A majority of consumers in Vijayawada do not have these cards, and moreover, the Minister concerned said there would be no link between the two.

Frequent changes in rules are creating problems to consumers, who are also facing the problem of delivery boys' insistence on payment of Rs.10 for each delivery. Officials must ensure that cylinder is supplied without insisting on ration card or voter card.

Shift chappal stand

The chappal stand on the Indrakeeladri hill is far away from the entrance of the main temple. During summer, devotees, particularly the aged, women and children, face the problem of walking without footwear from the stand to the temple entrance. I request the temple authorities to shift the existing stand near to the temple entrance or arrange another stand for the convenience of devotees.

Attractive offers needed

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is trying to compete with private operators in making available new kinds of packages for landline connections. It is making an all-out effort to convince customers not to surrender their landline connections. But BSNL authorities can easily woo customers by offering attractive and sleek handsets, preferably in the CDMA technology, like private operators such as Tata Indicom and Reliance. BSNL should also offer pre-paid option to landline connections, about which an announcement has been made but nothing has happened so far.

Water storage

There is no escape from augmenting the nation's water storage capacity. The debate can no longer be on the lines of big dams versus small dams. It is now a question of big dams plus small dams, and even reservoirs and all kinds of tanks. We need to catch the monsoon run-off and impound the excess water from the swollen rivers.

Countries like China, South Africa and Mexico have a per capita water storage of 1,000 cubic meters, while we have only 200 cubic meters. Last year, 90 per cent of the total rainfall was just in three weeks. If we don't have systems in place to tap this water, it will be catastrophic.
