SHIMLA: Entire tribal belt and other higher reaches in Himachal Pradesh reeled under severe cold wave conditions as high altitude tribal areas and mountain passes had moderate snowfall for the fourth day on Sunday. The mighty Dhauladhar ranges in Kangra district, Rohtang, Saach and Kunzam Passes, Sri Khan and Kinner Kailash mountain peaks in Kinnaur tribal district and pin and Hangrang valleys in Lahaul and Spiti district experienced intermittent snowfall since yesterday causing sharp fall in mercury. The Suraj Tal and Chandra Tal lakes in tribal areas had frozen due to sudden fall in temperature which dipped three to five degrees below freezing point in high altitude tribal areas. The mid hills including Shimla, Dharamsala, Palampur and Manali had moderate rains accompanied by high velocity icy winds, causing sharp fall in day temperature. However, the minimum temperature in Shimla and Kalpa dipped to 9.4 Degrees and 2.1 Degrees Celsius. The sky remained heavily overcast in the region and fog covered the higher hills, hamering vehicular movement. The inclement weather in Kangra region led to cancellation of main events on three of the four days so far in 'Himalayan Paragliding Cup 2006' at Bir-Billing area. The Rohtang Pass (13,950 ft), Kunzam (14,000 ft) and Saach (14,500 ft) recorded 30 cm to 50 cm of snow and Saach pass had been closed even for pedestrians. - PTI
