Irregularities alleged

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation has alleged `irregularities' in the enrolment of voters belonging to private schools for the teacher's constituencies of the Legislative Council elections. In a statement issued here K. Venugopal, president, and S. K. Zilani, general secretary, said the `irregularities' were brought to the notice of the federation that voters without proper proof of service were being enrolled.

CPI (M) plea

HYDERABAD: B. V. Raghavulu, secretary of the State Committee of the CPI (M) appealed to the Government to implement the recommendations of the House Committee that had inquired into the privatisation of Nizam Sugar Limited.

In a letter sent to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, he said the panel questioned the decisions taken by the previous Government on NSL and the findings prima facie established the lapses as shown in its observations.

`Fill vacant posts'

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Unemployed Struggle Committee has asked the Government to take immediate steps to fill thousands of vacant posts in different departments besides stopping its moves for outsourcing of jobs.

Committee president R. Krishnaiah said in a statement that despite its election promise of filling 2.5 lakh vacant posts, the Congress Government had not initiated any steps in that direction thus far. - Special Correspondent

Quota opposed

HYDERABAD: A State-level convention on draft national tribal policy organised by Andhra Pradesh Girijana Ikya Vedika opposed political reservations for those whose family members were MPs and MLAs as also those occupying gazetted posts.

The convention sought a special package for women, in the draft, by encouraging SHGs to take up various activities. It suggested increase in number of Integrated Tribal Development Agencies in the State from the present ten. - Special Correspondent

Man gunned down

KARIMNAGAR: A notorious criminal was killed in an exchange of fire with the police on the outskirts of Gandi Hanuman temple in Ibrahimpatnam mandal on the border of Karimnagar district in the early hours of Sunday.

The police said G. Laxminarayana (45), a native of Vemulakurthi village of Ibrahimpatnam, was involved in four cases including two murders. On Sunday, the police while conducting vehicle checks spotted Laxminarayana on a two-wheeler. On seeing the police, he tried to escape. Suspecting him to be a Maoist, they chased him. But, he opened fire at the police. The police retaliated the fire killing him. - Staff Reporter

Found murdered

KHAMMAM: An activist of the CPI (ML-Praja Pratighatana) Kattula Batannau alias Bhuta Singh, 25 was found murdered near his native village Sayanapally in Gundala mandal on Sunday. The police said he was targeted by rival extremist groups. He was reportedly beaten to death and his body was abandoned in the forests. The police suspect the hand of CPI(Maoist) in the killing. - Staff Reporter

Fire destroys shops

MAHABUBNAGAR: In a major fire accident six crackers shops were destroyed at Gadwal town in the district on Saturday. The loss was estimated at Rs. 3 lakhs.

The six crackers shops were put up in temporary sheds at Ramanandha Teertha crossroads. - Correspondent

Temple to supply free milk to devotees

KURNOOL: Srisailam Devastanam will supply free milk to devotees during `Kartheekamasam', said temple Executive Officer Hari Jawaharlal. The temple authorities took the decision as darshan is expected to take six to seven hours during the auspicious days from - October 23 to November 20. Around ten lakh pilgrims are expected to worship at Srisailam during these days.

Five more Nirmithi Kendras

Madanapalle: Five more Nirmithi Kendras have been sanctioned to the Madanapalle housing society. Every month, one-lakh cement bricks will be made in each centre. For this, an investment of Rs. 25 lakhs will be made, Rs. 5 lakhs for each centre. Officials are busy in selecting sites for the kendras. — Staff Reporter

Awareness rally on dengue held

TIRUPATI: School students took out a rally in the town to create awareness among the public on the steps needed to keep diseases like chikungunya and dengue at bay.

Municipal Commissioner T. Sakala Reddy and Health Officer B. Bhishmaiah Naidu led the rally, in which placard-holding students shouted slogans on the need to maintain hygiene and sanitation in houses by taking up mosquito control practices. They also enlightened the public on the symptoms of the two dreaded diseases.

Canara Bank nets profit

KURNOOL: Canara Bank increased its net profit by 89 per cent in the second quarter during the current financial year. In a statement here on Friday, Assistant General Manager K. Vidyasagar said the bank posted a profit of Rs. 361 crores in the second quarter as against Rs 253 crores in the first quarter.

Traffic volunteer hurt in accident

ANANTAPUR: A traffic volunteer regulating traffic, Anjaneyulu, 20, was accidentally pulled for about 500 meters by a fire tender on Saturday night. He was admitted to private hospital with serious injuries on his chest, stomach, back and limbs.

Farmer electrocuted

GUNTUR: A 35-year-old farmer died at Gaddiganumula tribal thanda in Bollapalli mandal of Guntur district on Saturday night when he went to his field to switch off motorised pump.

After celebrating Diwali, Neenawat Sreenu Nayak, went to his field along with his wife. In the darkness he came in contact with a live wire and got electrocuted.-Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: A resident of KVP Colony, Mastan Vali, was killed in a road accident on the Nallapadu Road in the city on Sunday.-Staff Reporter

Tobacco bales gutted

GUNTUR: In a fire mishap some bales of tobacco and other material were destroyed in Lavanya Enterprises on the Amaravathi Road in the city on Sunday. There was no casualty. - Staff Reporter

Research paper awarded

Kakinada : B. Sudha Rani, whose research paper on `Changing trends in STD' was adjudged as the best and brought her the `Govindan Nair Award' at the 30th National conference of the Indian Association for the study of sexually transmitted diseases at Chennai recently, has been felicitated at a function held at the STD wing of the Government general hospital here on Sunday. MYMA to provide pension

Kakinada : The Muslim Young Men's Association (MYMA) has decided to extend their community service activities to the aged in form of distributing old age pensions to 35 people every year, according to Sk. Ahmed Ali shah Vali, its president. He told a press conference at the Seerat office here on Sunday, that every year they were distributing rice, clothes to 500 poor people and from this year another 50 people would be added to the beneficiaries list. - Correspondent

Srikakulam: "Stop suicide, start struggle," is the message the Communist Party of India wants to convey to farmers during the `rythu rakshan jatha' it is launching from Palasa in Srikakulam district on Monday.
