Mohammed panel seeks report

KOCHI: The Admissions Supervisory Committee (P.A. Mohammed Committee) has asked the Entrance Examinations Controller to report to it on the allotment of a private engineering college seat to a student who was admitted to a Government college. The committee took cognisance of the issue on its own and will take it up at its October 30 meeting. The student, who was allotted a seat in Electronics and Communication at Government Engineering College, Thrissur, alleged that someone fraudulently used his password to seek higher option. As a result, he was allotted a seat in mechanical engineering course at a private self-financing college . — Special Correspondent

Aid distributed to farmers

Idukki: The one-year moratorium on farm loans declared by the Government would be extended further if necessary, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said on Saturday. Speaking after distributing Rs.50,000 each to the next of kin of 85 farmers who committed suicide at Kattappana near here, he said solving the farm sector crisis was a priority area of the Government . — PTI

Draft environment policy published

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has published the draft environment policy on its official website to facilitate public discussion. It will be finalised after discussions with environmental organisations. Besides from the websites www.kerala.gov.in and prd.kerala.gov.in, the policy will be available for reference at the information centre of the Public Relations Department at the Press Club Building, a release said. — Special Correspondent

Restricted holiday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Government has declared a restricted holiday on October 23 in view of Ramazan, the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee said here on Sunday. This is in addition to the closed holiday on October 24. The Mahatma Gandhi University declared a holiday for all the institutions under it on Monday. All examinations stands postponed, an official spokesman said. — Special Correspondent

A platform for communal harmony

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Iftar, organised by the Thiruvalla Muslim Cultural Association at the St John's Cathedral Hall in Thiruvalla on Saturday, turned out to be a major communal harmony event in the locality. Transport Minister Mathew T.Thomas inaugurated the meet. Association president H.A.Khader presided. Dr Philipose Mar Chrysostum, head of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, Dr. Issac Mar Cleemis, Archbishop of the Thiruvalal Archdiocese of the Malankara Catholic Church, Akkeeramon Kalidasa Bhattathiri, tantri (chief priest) of the Sree Vallabha Temple, among others spoke.

Haggai seminar concludes today

PATHANAMTHITTA: The three-day leadership seminar organised by the Thiruvalla chapter of the Haggai Institute Alumni Association in Thiruvalla will come to a close on Monday. The seminar began with the keynote address by Valentine Davidar from Hyderabad on Saturday. Haggai chapter president M.M.Mathew presided. Dr. Abraham Varghese, Dr. Deepak Abraham from Christian Medical College, Vellore and Dr. George Samuel addressed the seminar on Sunday. Sunder Singh Sangma from Meghalaya will deliver the keynote address on Monday.
