Reconsider decision

The Chief Minister announced the decision to establish a university at Nalgonda and opening of five more professional colleges in Telangana region as a `Dasara gift'. Astonishingly, the most backward district of the State, i.e. Mahabubnagar, has been excluded from this `gift.' The district has been overlooked in all spheres; in education, industries and irrigation. There is no educational institution worth its name in the district. Most of the affluent people prefer to educate their wards in Hyderabad. The worst sufferers are economically weaker sections, Dalits and minorities. Bringing Mahabubnagar district under the proposed university at Nalgonda again will create more difficulties as the entire district surrounds Hyderabad, starting from the borders of Kurnool, Raichur and Gulbarga districts.

The Government should reconsider the matter. The retention of Mahabubnagar district with Osmania University is the only solution.

Disparities in society

Disparities in society are being fought against. (`Disparities in society on the rise', The Hindu dated October 1, 2006). However, there is a lack of unanimity among political parties, which are in power, on this issue. There was a hue and cry about power shortage and the widespread rain has softened the breaches but given rise to flood control problem.

Instead of coming to a common agreement as to the effective utilization of funds released or yet to be released we make the very release of funds another bone of contention. Whenever there is criticism, the common man visualises the indirect vein of distortion among the parties. As a matter of fact, all the ideologies have cropped up with the pious intention of mitigating sorrow and bringing the greatest good to the greatest number. The relief measures should get support from all the corners but it is a pity that a row over the sanction of funds slows down the developmental activities.

When one section of society becomes super rich, the other side needs incentives and concessions. There should be a general policy of self-sufficiency in the nation with moderate style of living.

Change mindset

There has been talk of electronic police information centre, e-policing, complaints to police on Internet, etc.

So far, it is a very good beginning for the police personnel for better services to the people. But as long as the mindset of the police personnel is stagnant without any change or transformation, what is the use of spending crores of rupees on modernisation?

It is an open secret that nothing moves in any police station without bribes or recommendations. There is no respect for anyone in any police station. Whoever approaches the police personnel has to encounter their rude behaviour, though there are some exceptions among police officers.

It is true that the need of the hour, in view of the grave law and order situation and increasing criminal activity, is to modernise the Police Department for quick and efficient results.

At the same time, the mindset and the hearts of the police personnel should be transformed totally for a citizen-friendly service. Humane, moral and ethical values should be given utmost importance among the police personnel. If time permits, let the police personnel participate in the different activities and functions of the society so as to build a good rapport with the people.

At the same time, the police should act sternly with criminals, anti-social elements and others who violate the law and create disturbances in society.
