Nellai Aavin to open hi-tech highway parlours

Staff Reporter

Objective is to popularise premium products of milk cooperative movement

TIRUNELVELI : Hi-tech parlours will be opened by Nellai Aavin on the highways, according to Collector G. Prakash.

A range of milk products, especially with its hot and cold thirst-quenchers, would be available, he told reporters here recently.

The highway parlours may either be directly operated by Aavin itself or by the members of any reputed self-help groups with the prime objective of popularising the premium products of the milk cooperative movement of Tamil Nadu Government among the public, particularly the travellers coming to Tamil Nadu from other States, he said.

Apart from milk, all the best value-added milk products of Aavin such as hot milk, hot and cold flavoured milk, ghee, lassi, butter, buttermilk, curd, badam milk, beda, milk powder, Aavin ice-cream varieties and Aavin mysurpa would be there to rejuvenate and tickle the taste-buds of tired travellers.

As a symbiotic measure, eateries to be operated by SHG members with special training in cookery may also accompany these proposed highway parlours so that attracting vehicles zooming past the highways would not be a problem.

Mr. Prakash said the Aavin highway parlours, to come up on uncluttered premises, would serve hygienically prepared excellent milk products to the public at the right price.

To ensure the quality of its milk products, Nellai Aavin had initiated several measures.

A homogeniser, costing about Rs.45 lakh, was imported from Italy to prepare full-cream milk, a much sought-after Aavin product by teashops and the restaurants in southern districts.

The Deep Freezer Room and the IDMC Pasteuriser, established at Aavin's Central Dairy Farm near Palayamkottai, ensures increased the shelf-life of the milk products. Increase in productivity has been achieved by the Programmed Logistic Circuit, which also carefully avoids leakages in the milk sachets.

Nellai Aavin procures 60,000 litres of milk daily from 15,689 milk producers in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts to sell 55,000 litres of milk every day, which stood only at 32,000 litre a day till last year.

"While the growth of Aavin hovers around 12 to 20 per cent in other districts, Nellai Aavin has registered 72 per cent growth to net a profit of Rs. 20.80 lakh," Mr. Prakash said.

To strengthen the bond between the SHG and the Aavin, 24 parlours have been allocated for women self-help groups, who sell 1,865 litres of milk every day, he said.
