Devotees throng temple for `Gurupeyarchi'

Staff Reporter

MADURAI : Thousands of devotees thronged the `Guru' temple at Kuruvithurai, near here, on Saturday for the `Gurupeyarchi' to offer prayers.

The planet `Guru' moved from Thula Rasi to Vrischikam on Friday midnight and the temple authorities saw a continuous flow of devotees for the special pujas that began since Saturday.

As this was an exclusive temple near Sholavandan in the district for the `Guru', the authorities made special arrangements to manage the huge rush and devotees took part in the `laksharchanai' that took place in the temple premises.

The temple priests, Sridhar Bhattar and Ranganath Bhattar, said that `maha puja' was the special event for Gurupeyarchi and it would continue for next 48 days.

"Kuruvithurai has important significance among the Guru temples and this is famous because of `suyambhu Guru' that will have full impact on the devotees who perform prayers here," Sridhar Bhattar said as he explained about the temple.

According to Ranganath Bhattar, the Gurupeyarchi is good for people belonging to five `rasis' of Vrishabham, Katakam, Tula, Makaram and Meenam.

For other rasis like Mesham, Midhunam, Vrischikam and Kanni, the Gurupeyarchi calls for special archana in any Guru temple to avoid hardships in life on health and monetary matters.

The Temple Executive Officer, S.Poornalingam, said that the temple had prepared special lockets of Guru that were kept in the mahayagam and devotees started purchasing them to ward off any difficulty.

Also, the devotees visited the nearby Arulmigu Chittirai Ratha Vallabha Perumal Temple and offered prayers.

Special buses and private vehicles were seen plying in the route and the temple officials expect more crowds in the next few days.
