New metro section trial run begins today

Staff Reporter

DMRC hopes to start it by Nov. 10

NEW DELHI: The first train would travel on the down line of the new 2.81 km Barakhamba-Indraprastha section of Line 3 of the Delhi Metro early on Monday morning, thereby heralding the end of the 65 km extended Phase I of the Delhi Metro system.

Announcing the landmark occasion, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said while on Sunday night the final testing of the overhead electrification was being undertaken, at around 1 a.m. on Monday, a train would for the first time go beyond the newly-constructed Mandi House station and travel up to Indraprastha station via the Pragati Maidan station and the state-of-the-art extra-dosed bridge over the Indian Railway tracks.

Stating that overhead electric system was being tested for short circuits, Mr Dayal said during the run of the new section, the train will travel on the down line at a "cautionary speed" of 25 km per hour.

During this run, that is expected to last about two-and-a-half hours at night, data would be collected over a computer on how the overhead system takes to the train, and how the train responds to the tracks and the civil works.

Thereafter on Monday, the train would also take a return journey on the up line and all these systems would be put to test once again. Then on Tuesday, the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system would be put to test and thereafter the train would be tested at full speed.

The spokesperson said the trials would continue till the second week of November and the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety is expected to inspect the system on November 7.

"We hope to start this corridor by November 10, a few days before the India International Trade Fair gets underway at Pragati Maidan on November 14".

Moreover, he said, the DMRC has made special arrangements at the Pragati Maidan station to cater to the extra rush of people during the fortnight long event, that attracts lakhs of visitors from all over the country.

"There will be extra ticket windows and ticket counters. And we will also be having extra automatic fare collection (AFC) system gates and staff deployed at the venue to provide easy travel and access to the visitors."
