An apology for a bus stand

The new bus stand for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses opposite the Panagal buildings at Saidapet has been functioning for two years now. Buses bound for several parts of southern Chennai and suburbs use this stop. So it is always crowded.

But the infrastructure at the bus stand is inadequate. Passengers have no platforms or seating arrangements or public conveniences. Even the waiting area has no tarred surface and dwellers of a nearby slum use the area for dumping waste causing foul smell. Senior citizens are the worst sufferers.

I suggest that the MTC authorities approach an MLA or an MP for funds from the local area development scheme to provide basic amenities at the bus stand.

Road widening

There is a road divider provided from TI Miller bus stop up to Ambedkar statue bus stop in Ambattur. There is a road bend near the Dunlop bus stop. The width of the road is not enough for drivers of vehicles to negotiate the curve and so those driving light vehicles find it difficult to give way to heavy vehicles.

On behalf of motorists, I appeal to the National Highways to widen the road near the Dunlop bus stop, blacktop the side carriageway to facilitate drivers of two-wheelers to give way to heavy vehicles and install reflectors on the road divider to help motorists to drive without hitting the road dividers at night.

Bus services

I wish to bring to your notice the termination of bus routes No. 4E, 18B, 23B and 47F from the Kotturpuram terminus. The termination of services has put the public to great inconvenience.

I suggest that the authorities concerned revive bus services from either Kotturpuram, Raja Annamalaipuram or Mylapore, to serve the travelling public and make scheduled stops at Kotturpuram.

MRTS services

The MRTS service was introduced to help office-goers reach their destinations as the bus services were not sufficient. Commuters who come by EMU operated from Avadi to Beach and from Tambaram to Beach can use MRTS service to reach places such as Mylapore, Triplicane, Tiruvanmiyur, Chintadripet etc. Hence, the MRTS timings should be so arranged to connect the passengers who come from Avadi and Tambaram.

Apart from this, there should be attempts to reintroduce Tambaram-Avadi direct EMU service. This was in force when first gauge conversion was taken up between Tambaram and Beach. At present, those who want to go to Avadi have to get down at the Park station and catch the train from Central to go to Avadi.

One can see commuters from the Park station running to catch the trains bound for Tiruvallur and Gummudipondi.

Overflowing sewage

For over a month, underground sewer lines in T.V. Nagar and NVN Nagar behind J.J. Complex and Thirumangalam signal lights remain blocked. As a result, manholes are overflowing and sewer water floods the streets making life miserable for the people.

The Metrowater officials say this is because of the blocking of the main sewer line on Shanthi Colony a km away. But despite repeated complaints, no action has been taken.

The stagnant sewage also causes serious impediments to road-users. Vehicles, especially two-wheelers, find it difficult to pass through the area. Added to this is the digging up of the roads in this locality, some of which are partially left open.

The stagnation has also made it a fertile ground for mosquitoes, thereby posing a serious health hazard.

This locality is thickly populated and heavily congested that people are put to untold suffering and misery, having to wade through slush and filthy sewer water.

Elders and children are the worst affected.

There is also a threat of monsoon rain making the situation worse. The pathetic condition of the area has to be seen to be believed. Unless the authorities take expeditious action to solve the problem, the situation is bound to get worse and incur the ire of the people.

Annanagar
