NEW DELHI: Thanks to the presence of mind displayed by a 12-year-boy and prompt help provided by his uncle, neighbours and police, a robbery was averted at Bara Hindu Rao in North Delhi on October 20. The police have arrested four persons in this connection. According to the police, Pooja, wife of Puneet Kumar Jain, a resident of Bara Hindu Rao, had gone to temple on October 20 evening when three persons came to Mr. Jain's house and knocked on the door. His 12-year-old son Chandan Kumar Jain, a Class VII student of Cambridge School in Srinivaspuri, looked through the magic eye and saw three persons whom he did not know. When he inquired without opening the door, one of the persons told him that his name was Bunty and that he had come to deliver a Diwali gift to his father. Chandan then called up his father, a jeweller based in Chandni Chowk, over a phone and told him about the trio. His father told him that he did not know anybody by that name. However, he asked Chandan to open the door and get them to talk to him over the phone. When Chandan came out, one of them ostensibly began talking to his father over the phone and then suddenly all three barged in. As the phone got disconnected, Mr. Jain became suspicious that something was amiss. He immediately set out for his home. On the way, Mr. Jain called up his cousin, Amit, who lived nearby and other neighbours to rush for help. Within no time, they reached the house and, realising that the three persons were inside, bolted the door from outside. Constable Sanjay Kumar of Bara Hindu Rao police station too rushed to the spot. In the meantime, however, one of the three persons managed to escape brandishing a knife while the other two were caught. Those arrested were identified as Asif and Shakeel. At their instance, the police arrested their two associates, Rahis and Arkan. The police said the accused had hidden a country-made revolver inside the "gift box". They added that Asif was involved in a case of theft and had earlier been convicted in a case. Shakeel and Arkan were working as tailors, while Rahis, a resident of Jyotiba Phule Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, was a contractor. Meanwhile, the police have decided to reward Chandan, Mr. Jain and Constable Sanjay for their alertness and bravery that prevented a major crime.
