Manipal Hospital to expand BMT Centre

BANGALORE: Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) has tied up with the University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP) to expand the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Centre at Manipal Hospital here.

The Manipal Group will invest close to Rs. 3 crore to expand the current BMT facility to 50 rooms. The Hospital will provide capital and operating funds to develop and operate the BMT Centre in accordance with UMP standards, MEMG officials said.

The Manipal Group has introduced both allogenic and autologous BMT, and the price ranges from Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh. As the costs of drugs have come down, the benefits will be passed on to patients, the MEMG officials said. — Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life in Holalkere taluk

CHITRADURGA: A farmer committed suicide at Echanahalli village in Holalkere taluk on Sunday. Muttalingappa, 60, hanged himself when his family was away from home.

The police said he had taken a loan of Rs. 20,000 from a financial institution and borrowed some money from relatives and friends. He could not settle his debts owing to crop failure and resorted to suicide, the police said. The Holalkere police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Manmohan condemns attack on Kore

Belgaum: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi telephoned to enquire about the condition of Karnataka Lingayat Education Society (KLES) chairman and Congress leader Prabhakar B. Kore, MLC. Dr. Singh and Ms. Gandhi expressed shock over the incident and condemned the attack on Mr. Kore, according to a KLES Hospital release here on Monday.

Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan and the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar visited KLES Hospital and met Mr. Kore's family members. They condemned the attempt on his life.

Hospital sources said Mr. Kore was recovering fast. — Staff Correspondent'

Two doctors selected for award

GULBARGA: Guruprasad Kaginele, a doctor based in Minnesota in the U.S., has won the prestigious Dr. P.S. Shankar Shreshta Vaidya Sahitya Award for 2006 for his book in Kannada titled "Vaidya Mattobba." with K. Ramanand Banari, hailing from Kasaragod in Kerala, has also been selected for the award for his collection of poetry on various aspects of medicine and health, "Arogya Geethe".

According to a press release by the secretary, Dr P.S. Shankar Pratishtan, the awards will be presented at a function here on January 1 next year. — Special Correspondent

Yakshagana artiste to be honoured

MANGALORE: Suma Sourabha, a Kannada literary fortnightly, will organise its annual "Suma Sourabha Samskruthika Sambramaha" and felicitation function at the Town Hall here on October 27. The organisers will present the "Yaksha Rathnakara" title to well-known Yakshagana exponent and bhagawatha Karnuru Korgappa Rai on the occasion, according to M.J. Rao, editor of the fortnightly.

Yakshagana talamaddale "Kumara Vijaya" will be staged and Varsha Nayak will present a folk dance on the occasion. — Staff Correspondent

Raichur: Cultural rallies taken out in connection with Suvarna Karnataka celebrations will help in encouraging the younger generation learn more about the religion and culture of the State, Deputy Commissioner Tushar Girinath has said.

Recruitment

Bidar: The written test to recruit civil police constables will be held here on October 29. Hall tickets have been posted to the candidates. Those who do not get the hall tickets till October 27 should contact the District Police Office.

Students with roll numbers between 366101 and 366903 will have to take the test at Karnataka College; those with roll numbers from 366904 to 367450 at Guru Nanak Public school; and those the roll numbers from 612901 to 613803 at Akka Mahadevi Women's College, a release said.

Cash stolen

BIJAPUR: Thieves took away cash and valuables worth Rs. 90,000 from a house at Khasgateshwar Colony in Muddebihal town on Saturday night.

They entered the house by breaking open the front door, the police said.

A case has been registered following a complaint lodged by house owner Naganagouda Hesaraddi.

Man killed in road accident

SIRSI: A man was killed on the spot and three persons when tempo by which they were traveling and NWRTC bus collided at Isloor Cross near here on Sunday. The identity of the victim is yet to be established. The injured have been admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli.

JD(S) meeting

Belgaum: The Janata Dal (Secular) Belgaum district unit has announced to host North-Karnataka Party Workers' Conference in the city in the last week of November. Chief Minister H.D. Kumarswamy will be felicitated on the occasion. The former Prime Minister and party president, H.D. Deve Gowda, would be performing the "bhoomi puja" for the building to house the party office in Veerabhadra Nagar adjacent to district police headquarters in the city.

Drowned

HUBLI: In a tragic incident, a three-year old boy was drowned in an open tank of his own house. The incident came to light on Sunday afternoon after the parents of the boy started searching for him. The police gave the name of the victim as Prajwal, son of Uday Gaikwad, a resident of Maratha Galli in Hubli. Hubli Town Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

DHARWAD: The police have arrested 15 persons on charge of gambling at Narayanpur in Dharwad on Sunday and recovered a cash of Rs. 6,215 from them. Dharwad Suburban Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Food adalat

MADIKERI: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav will hold "food adalat" here on November 11. Complaints can be made on irregular supply of foodgrains in the public distribution system, delay in opening of the PDS outlets, and irregularities in the supply of food in the anganwadi centres and schools. The complaints with name and address of the complainant should reach the office of the Food Adalat section in the office of the Deputy Director of Food before 5.30 p.m. on October 28. — Staff Correspondent
