Hubli-Dharwad
Staff Correspondent
HUBLI: With a spurt in the number of accidents in and around the twin cities, the police have decided to deal firmly with errant and rash drivers. The police have decided to penalise vehicle owners for drunken driving and have launched a drive in this regard. In the special drive conducted from October 13 to 20, the police in Hubli-Dharwad booked 1,561 cases and collected a spot fine of Rs. 3,58,400. While 42 cases were against drunken driving, 713 cases related to driving without valid driving licence, documents and rash driving. The speed radar gun, which the Hubli-Dharwad Police had recently acquired, helped in detecting 806 cases of exceeding speed limits. In these cases, the local court levied a fine of Rs. 57,000 on the offenders. The police have decided to continue the special drive and have warned that they would deal with vehicle owners violating traffic rules in a stringent manner. In spite of the police conducting special drives to curb violation of traffic rules, people tend to break rules with immunity. Some motorcyclists in the city complained that only two-wheelers and public transport vehicles were targeted while conducting such drives. Their complaint was that the traffic police rarely stopped cars for routine check up and even if caught violating rules, they let them off. But the traffic police officials refuted these allegations.
