BELLARY: Bellary district had got a lion's share of the Ekikarana Award to be presented to those who fought for unification of the State. As many as seven persons from the district figure in the list of 36 people chosen by a committee headed by M.P. Prakash, Home Minister, and released by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Bangalore on Monday. K. Chennabasappa and Basavaraj Kurgod, retired district judges; M.M.J. Sadyojathappa (Kottur), a former Minister; C.M. Revanasiddaiah (Sirguppa), a former MLA and farmers' leader; M. Vasudevacharya, a Gandhian and educationist of Kudligi who died recently, A. Nanjappa, doctor; and Mudenur Sanganna, a folk scholar in Chigateri village of Harpanahalli taluk, which was part of Bellary district before reorganisation of the districts and later made part of Davanagere district, have been chosen for the award. People in Bellary district contributed a lot during the unification movement and fought against the Andhra Pradesh lobby in getting Bellary retained in Karnataka.
Bellary-Hospet areas
The State Reorganisation Commission headed by Fazal Ali had favoured transfer of the Bellary-Hospet areas up to Tungabhadra dam to Andhra Pradesh. This move became public following a report in a Kannada daily published from Hubli. This triggered off a wave of protest in Karnataka, especially in Bellary. The struggle for retention of Bellary-Hospet areas in Karnataka is being recognised by giving awards.
