Water released from Vaigai dam for second crop irrigation

THENI : Water has been released from the Vaigai dam for irrigating the second crop in three districts.

Talking to mediapersons after releasing water from the dam near here on Monday, the Theni Collector Rajesh Lakhoni said that 2,020 cusecs of water had been released through Periyar and Thirumangalam main canals to irrigate 1,50,043 acres of wetland in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts.

A total of 20,645 acres in Vadipatti, 54,312 in Madurai North, 48,963 in Melur, 13,723 in Usilampatti and 4,369 in Thirumangalam blocks in Madurai district, 1,992 acres in Nilakottai block in Dindigul district and 5,561 in Sivaganga block and 478 in Thiruppattur block in Sivaganga district would be irrigated. Turn system would be introduced, if there was any slump in storage levels or failure of the southwest monsoon, he said.

Mr. Lakhoni advised the farmers to use water judiciously and raise short-term crops for better yield.

The water level in the dam on Monday stood at 62.96 feet with a storage of 4,194 mcft.

The dam had been receiving comfortable inflow of 1,585 cusecs, thanks to steady showers in the Periyar and Vaigai dam catchments. Besides, 20 cusecs of water had been released for drinking water supply to Madurai city and 21 cusecs for Andipatti-Sedapatti drinking water scheme, he said. The level in the Periyar dam stood at 125.30 feet. The flow was 1,350 cusecs and discharge 750 cusecs. The storage was 3,683 cusecs.

While the Periyar dam received 3 mm rain, Tekkadi recorded 2 mm, Shanmuga River 4 mm and Gudalur and Veerapandi one mm each.
