dated October 25, 1956: Upper berths for sleeping

The Railway Minister, Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, has said that a scheme for providing sleeping accommodation in all third class carriages by providing folding upper berths at a cost of Rs.3 per berth was under consideration. Addressing the workers at the Integral Coach Factory at Perambur, Madras, on October 23, he said that, when introduced, this arrangement would prove "a great boon" to the travelling public. On arrival, the Railway Minister was received by the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. K. Sadagopan and taken round the various units. The first third class integral coach, produced by the ICF and furnished by the Southern Railway Carriage and Wagon Shops, was inspected by the Minister, who was fully satisfied with the workmanship and the amenities provided for the third class passengers in the coach.
