dated October 25, 1956: `Diet of speeches'

The Prime Minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, said in New Delhi on October 23 that it was not a good thing to serve a "diet of speeches' at every public function and reception. Inaugurating the third Inter-University Youth Festival, he said that the tendency these days was to turn every function into a public meeting where a "fare of speeches, political or otherwise" was served. "I am also guilty to some extent of making too many speeches," he added. The Prime Minister said it was good to make a speech and express an opinion but one should guard against "turning round the same opinion rigidly all one's life without trying to learn from others."
