`ID MUBARAK': A happy gift for President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Id-ul-Fitr at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: President A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi have extended their Id-ul-Fitr greetings. They said the festival evokes feelings of brotherhood, compassion and sharing in all.

Mr. Kalam said Id-ul-Fitr ``brings joy and happiness to the people on the culmination of the month of Holy Ramzan, a period of fasting, prayer and charity. May this festival strengthen mutual goodwill and inspire each one of us to follow the path of love and compassion.''

Mr. Shekhawat said the ``spirit of generosity and charity associated with this festival helps usher in a humane and compassionate society in this strife-torn world.''

He expressed the hope that happiness and harmony associated with the festival would ``unite us all in a common brotherhood of humanity.'' Dr. Singh said Id-ul-Fitr ``evokes feelings of brotherhood, compassion and sharing in all and strengthens the pluralistic bonds of our composite society. May Id-ul-Fitr usher in peace, prosperity and happiness for all.''

While extending good wishes to all Muslim brothers and sisters, Ms. Gandhi said: "Id-ul-Fitr comes after a month of fasting, a period of soul elevating in which the essentials of faith are rejuvenated. These include Islam's message of peace and fraternity of all humankind."

A large number of people greeted Mr. Kalam at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. Students, elderly, representatives of social organisations and specially-abled persons exchanged greetings with him.
