Air wing likely for ITBP soon

Staff Reporter

Battalions to be increased

NEW DELHI: Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Tuesday said the proposal to raise the number of ITBP battalions was in advanced stages of clearance.

Addressing ITBP jawans on the occasion of the 45th Raising Day parade at the Tigri Camp here, he said the force was also likely to acquire soon an air wing, comprising advanced light helicopters. Thus troop movements in forward locations would become easy.

For internal security

While the force was now being deployed primarily for guarding the borders, it would in future be increasingly used in maintaining internal security, law and order and disaster management, the Minister said.

ITBP Director-General V.K. Joshi said the primary job of the force was to maintain vigil on the India-China border at a height of 9,000-18,500 feet above the sea level in sub-zero temperatures. The number of personnel had to be increased for frequent rotation of those posted at difficult locations. The Minister presented the President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service and Police Medals for Meritorious Service to officers and personnel.
