Garden of medicinal plants mooted

Staff Reporter

`Such a facility at Lam will help pharmacy students'

GUNTUR: A good garden of medicinal plants at Lam will help pharmacy students experiment with extraction of different kinds of medicines and preparations during their course, Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice-Chancellor V. Balamohandas has said.

Delivering a keynote address on the occasion of the Second Foundation Day of Chalapathi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Lam on Guntur outskirts on Tuesday, the Vice-Chancellor said that establishing a modern medical store in the college and training students in the areas of hospital and clinical pharmacy were very essential for the current generation.

With all hospitals in the Government and private sector getting modernised and catering to the specialised specific needs of patients, it was essential for pharmacy graduates to be well versed with the management and running of a modern medical store by the time they passed out. This would keep them abreast of market and realistic needs in the medical care arena.

While managing the front-end of a pharmacy was one aspect, identifying the right medicinal plant as the source and continuously researching in developing newer and effective medicines through a captive medicinal plant garden was essential.

University Registrar K. Viyyanna Rao said that 30 per cent of pharmaceutical products worldwide were sourced from India, hence there was tremendous scope for pharmacy graduates in the job market.

Vikas Educational Institutions Director P. Sukhder asked students to develop better communication skills.

College principal Nadendla Rama Rao explained the achievements of the college in the past two years and presided over the function. CIPS president Y.V. Anjaneyulu was also present on the occasion.
