Five new meet records set

WARANGAL: On a day when five new meet records were set, 17-year-old V. Prabhavathi of Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) hogged the limelight. Braving pain in the legs and wearing a normal shoe, she won the 3,000m event clocking 10:58.80 in the third National Youth athletics (under-18) meet at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.

The following are the new meet records with previous records mentioned in the brackets:

Boys: Sandeep of Haryana in javelin with 63.46m (61.38 set by Bikas Rana of Uttaranchal in 2005); Dharam Raj Kanojia of Uttaranchal in 10,000m event clocking 50:14.75 (51:34.29 by Ajay Rathi of Haryana in 2004).

Girls: Arti Yadav in high jump with 1.68m (1.64m by Kavya Muthanna of Karnataka in 2005); Steffi Cardozo in shot put with 12.42m (11.99m by A. Amithcham in 2004); Reena of Haryana in hammer throw with 46.22m (45.82m by Shilpa Chauhan of U.P. in 2005).

The first day of the meet also saw technical official Xavier V. Jones catching two athletes — javelin thrower Nitin Rathi of Delhi and Dinesh Joon of relay squad — red-handed while taking injections to enhance their performance level. Both of them were banned from the meet with immediate effect. Ten athletes including four from Andhra Pradesh were also barred from competing after they were found over-aged.

Earlier, E. Suvarna, Mayor of Warangal, inaugurated.

High jump: Jitin C. Thomas (Ker) 2.01m. Long jump: S.S. Angelo (Kerala) 6.94m. Shot put: Naveen Kumar (Har) 17.13m. Javelin: Sandeep (Har) 63.46m. 10,000m: Dharm Raj Kanojia (Uttaranchal) 50m 14.75s.

Girls: 100m: G. Nagalakshmi (TN) 12.40s. 400m: Jauna Murmu(Ori) 59.21s. 1,500m: S.R. Bindu (Ker) 4m 49.78s. 3,000m: V. Prabhavathi (AP) 10m 58.80s. 100m hurdles: G. Gayathry (TN) 14.78s.
