The State's Hunger-Free Kerala project seems to have taken off well in the district. Providing food for 300 patients and their helpers every night is an achievement of the Social Welfare Department. In a recently held meeting, funds for the project were collected to meet the requirements till May 16. According to District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish: "We expect more sponsors to join the project and hopefully the entire amount till December next would be collected soon." Any organisation or individual can donate funds for either a day's expense or week or fortnight and so on. The programme was started on December 26 last year. While the expenses for the initial months came up quickly, the funds were trickling in slowly for the rest of the year, but enough to meet the requirements. Corporate sponsors were few earlier. Now a couple of them have come forward. Schools and professionals' associations have taken up the campaign too and have already collected and donated a big amounts like Rs.90,000 and Rs.1 lakh.
