Bidar ZP likely to hold elections

Staff Correspondent

High Court has recognised the no-confidence motion as valid

Bidar: Bidar Zilla Panchayat is likely to hold elections for selecting its president and vice-president, with the High Court recognising as valid the no-confidence motion the incumbents lost recently.

The Opposition parties led by the Congress had moved a proposal for a no- confidence motion against the Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP combine in August. The president and Janata Dal (Secular) member Anil Bhusare and vice- president and BJP member Jyoti Charan Rathod had moved the High Court challenging the proposal.

The High Court refused to stay the no-confidence motion.

The zilla panchayat as asked not to announce the results. The court allowed the president and vice-president to continue in their position till further orders. The Opposition parties won the no-confidence motion on September 8. On October 19, the High Court dismissed the petition by Mr. Bhusare and Ms. Rathod. With this, the Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP had two choices — to go for fresh elections or to appeal against the single judge bench order.

Notices

Meanwhile, acting on the High Court order, the officials issued notices to Mr. Bhusare and Ms. Rathod to return all facilities and staff that they were provided.

The Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP had a power-sharing arrangement. After five months of the first term, there was some dissatisfaction among BJP members over election of presidents and members to the standing committees.

The Congress exploited this dissidence and went in for the no-confidence motion.

Three BJP members voted for it and the ruling combine lost.
