Farmers told to utilise solar energy

BIJAPUR: Shanthamallikarjuna Swamiji of Jnanayogashram has called upon farmers to utilise more solar energy as it is cost-effective and environment-friendly.

He was speaking after laying foundation stone for the new complex on Anti Famine Society premises near Ambedkar Chowk here on Tuesday.

He stressed the importance of scientific methods of farming. However, traditional methods, especially organic farming, could not be neglected, he said.

The district had vast tracts of fertile land, but they had remained unutilised for want of water.

Irrigation projects that had been pending for years shoud be executed, he said.

He also lauded the service rendered by the society to the farming community.

President of the society Gulappa Shetgar said the institution had initiated several measures to help increase revenue for development programmes.

The State Bank of Hyderabad had funded the project and its main office would be shifted to the complex once it was completed.

It had also been decided to set up a residential school for rural children, Mr. Shetgar added.
