Statue for Narayan

It was heartening to read that Mysore plans to honour R.K. Narayan by installing a statue (Oct. 18) in his memory. The city can also consider laying out a theme park that brings alive Malgudi — its streets, houses and people — and have play rides to make it a commercially viable tourist spot. A statue of Narayan in this park will help the younger generation to learn more about the great son of Mysore and his works.

Murali Saranadhi,
Chennai

Indian English literature will live for centuries through Narayan's works. A statute will do nothing more to keep his memory alive. RKN would have surely disapproved of the idea of his statue at a junction with bird-droppings on it. Instead, a campaign for plain English or a Chair in the Mysore University can be thought of as a tribute to the great writer.

V. Rajagopalan,
Chennai
