Janani, Sandeep win the `IGBC Green Design Competition'

CHENNAI: Janani Ananth and Sandeep Vasanth, final year B.Arch students of MEASI Academy, Chennai, won accolades at the `Green Building Congress 2006', as they bagged the first prize in the `IGBC Green Design Competition'.

The drawings submitted by the duo got them the first place from among nearly 140 entries submitted to the Congress. The competition was open to all undergraduate architecture and design students from India. Janani and Sandeep designed a `green home', which could be built on an area of 3,500 sq.ft. for a small sized family with the available resources in a desert.

Their building, made of recycled material, had a maximised view of the desert from the living room. Two-foot-thick walls made of stabilised earth to keep away heat, high angle rays reflective roof forms, and passive cooling techniques were all part of the model. Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, chief of ISRO, gave away the awards at a function held recently at Bangalore.

The `IGBC Green Design Competition' was held as part of the Green Building Congress 2006, held to create awareness of sustainable design solutions.
