NEW DELHI: One of the Capital's oldest British cemeteries -- Nicholson Cemetery -- which over the years had been vandalised and ruined, has been provided a much-needed facelift.
Key 1857 figure
The cemetery, named after one of the key figures of 1857, John Nicholson, has been finally restored to its past glory. Nicholson was a British Army general who served as an officer in the Bengal Army under the British East India Company and was later buried in this cemetery. Realising the importance of the cemetery in Delhi's history, the British High Commission here has supported G4Securicor (provider of security and related services in over 110 countries) in carrying out the renovations as part of its corporate initiative. The spruced up and renovated cemetery located opposite ISBT at Kashmere Gate was "inaugurated" on Tuesday.
Novel Initiative
G4S Regional Marketing Director Rehana Qureshi said: "We are proud to be part of a novel initiative. The cemetery was in ruins and people were finding it difficult and saddening to bury their near and dear ones in such damaged graves. That is when we decided to take a positive step and help out here. Our group has been involved in various corporate social responsibility activities and one such initiative is the renovation and restoration of the Nicholson Cemetery that the company has been involved with since the past two years. Out of many of our community care programme, we have also been helping aged people in the Grant Govan Memorial Homes, an old age home, by providing them better and comfortable living.''
