Corrections and clarifications

  • A few readers wondered what "Cartoonscape" (Editorial page, October 24, 2006) depicted. Keshav clarifies that it pertained to the espionage activities of the ISI of Pakistan and exposed the chinks in the armour of the Indian Army. The "hiss" sound hinted at the snake within the armour. Also, it was assumed that the heavily armed person in the cartoon, in the context of the news of the day, referred to the army and hence was not labelled. This could be a reason why readers were not able to interpret the cartoon.

  • A reader points out that in the report "Tatas acquire Corus Group" (October 21, 2006, page 1), the £4.3 billion deal had been incorrectly converted as Rs. 3,667 crore. The error was in the earlier editions. Later editions had the correct figure of Rs. 36,650 crore.

  • The heading of a Salem (Tamil Nadu) report was: "Call for orientation to sensory disabled women" (Tamil Nadu, October 24, 2006, page 3). A reader wondered what sensory disability meant. The American Osteopathic Association says it is those who have autism, blindness, deafness, or a severe vision or hearing impairment.

  • The sentence in "BJP for immediate execution of Afzal Guru" (Andhra Pradesh, October 21, 2006, page 7) was: "The party leaders criticised former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad for writing to the Prime Minister in this regard [seeking clemency]." A reader points out that Ghulam Nabi Azad is the CM of Jammu and Kashmir.
