HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has called upon the Collectors to educate farmers on crop diversification, as part of the Rythu Chaitanya Yatras. Dr. Reddy, in a letter addressed to all Collectors, on Tuesday dispelled apprehensions among farmers about the free power supply to the agricultural sector. He said the Government was firm that the free supply would continue, urging ryots to switch over from cultivating paddy to ID crops. He said the yatra for rabi 2006-07 launched on Monday would continue till November 5 to educate farmers the need for crop diversification and about the latest technology in agriculture to increase productivity.
ID crops
The Chief Minister asked the Collectors to explain the advantage of ID crops over paddy under wells and borewells in terms of water-saving and better economic returns. He said during the rabi seven-hour power supply would be regulated in two spells of three and four hours each. Keeping in view the likely power shortage in April next, farmers should be educated to grow crops suited to the supply pattern. He said the Government had already announced a number of steps to those farmers who go in for ID crops. The Marketing Department would ensure that farmers get the right price for their produce. He pointed out that apart from improving water use efficiency, it was essential to educate farmers on the latest agronomic practices and pest control management on pulses and oilseeds to increase returns.
