Hubli-Dharwad
Staff Correspondent
HUBLI: P. Manivannan, Commissioner of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, has ruled out the shifting of the central office of the corporation to Rayapur situated between Hubli and Dharwad. In a release issued here on Tuesday, he clarified that shifting of the central office was not on the agenda of the HDMC at this juncture and there was no plan to shift the office. Referring to media reports on Tuesday, Mr. Manivannan said the reports were based on an erroneous letter from the Assistant Commissioner (Administration) to the zonal assistant commissioner. The HDMC has spent more than Rs. 50 lakh on renovating the storeroom which houses the IT department, Health Department and Accounts Department. Also, a new building had been built for the electrical department of the HDMC and gardens were being spruced up, he added. At this juncture, thinking about shifting central office can only be an imagination of some vested interests and not that of the Commissioner or the Administrator, he said. When the HDMC was struggling to provide basic amenities such as drinking water and roads, it could not waste time on frivolous issues such as shifting the central office.
`Unimportant'
It was the least important issue for the corporation at this point of time, Mr. Manivannan added. The Commissioner made it clear that a decision on a sensitive issue such as shifting the central office would never be discussed unless there is an elected council functioning. The Commissioner also wondered whether this was a tactic by some vested interests to divert the attention of the public, when HDMC had completed a survey of the illegal buildings in the twin cities and was scheduled to release the details to the media.
Memo issued
Mr. Manivannan told The Hindu that a memo had been issued to the Assistant Commissioner (Administration) to give clarification for the erroneous letter sent to the zonal office. He said the Assistant Commissioner had been asked to get details about the KSRP building at Rayapur and there was no mention about shifting the office. However, the manner in which the letter had been drafted conveyed an altogether different meaning, he said.
