Government blamed for fever deaths in Rajiv Nagar

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Pradesh Karshaka Congress (I) has blamed the Government and the City Corporation for the death of four people in the Rajiv Nagar colony, Sanghumukham. A pressnote quoting the district general secretary of the organisation P. Stellas Kannanthura accused the authorities of negligence in addressing the problems in the colony.

It said the accumulation of garbage and stagnation of stormwaters had resulted in unhygienic conditions in the ward that culminated in the outbreak of viral fever and the death of four residents. The pressnote said the reconstruction of the main road from the All Saints College junction to the airport had left the bordering areas on a lower level. "As a result, the rainwater flows into the colonies and mixes with garbage and wastewater to create a cesspool that stagnates for months on end. There has been no effort on the part of the Government or the Corporation to drain the water, clear the garbage or launch preventive measures against epidemics. Hundreds of families on both sides of the road are still exposed to public health hazards," the pressnote said.

Flaying the Health Minister's statement that the four deaths were caused by other reasons, Mr. Stellas said it exposed the Government's bid to evade responsibility and wriggle out of the situation. He said the token measures launched by the Government in the wake of the deaths had been withdrawn, with no change in the overall situation. "Most of the huts in the Rajiv Nagar colony were flooded in Monday's rains, leaving the residents to face another round of health hazards."
