Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: The staff members of the hospital development society (HDS) at General Hospital here went on a sudden strike on Tuesday morning in protest against the attack on the security staff by unidentified persons on Monday evening. Two security personnel at the hospital were seriously injured after two persons on a motorbike assaulted them late on Monday evening. The duo who launched the attack had created a ruckus at the hospital earlier in the day when the security personnel refused to let them enter the hospital without taking the visitors' pass. The other hospital staff also took out a protest march, expressing their solidarity with the striking HDS staff. They said that anti-social elements had launched a similar attack on the hospital staff a few months ago and no action was taken by the authorities to prevent such incidents. The hospital authorities had then written to the Government that a police aid post should be set up at the hospital to check violence by miscreants inside the hospital campus. However, there was no response from the Government. The strike affected the functioning of the payment counters, including those issuing tokens for ECG and X-ray services, creating difficulties for the patients. However, all emergency cases requiring ECG or X-ray diagnostics were done promptly without insisting on the tokens, hospital authorities said. The striking employees agreed to resume their duties only after District Collector N. Ayyappan, who reached the hospital, agreed to take up the issue of setting up the police aid post there. He said it was difficult as no new posts had been created in recent times. The Cantonment police have registered a case of causing hurt in connection with the incident. Prasad, Sub-Inspector (SI), Cantonment, identified one of the suspects as Kumar, a local union leader living at Puthenpalam colony.
