AWAITS INHABITANTS: An enclosure for deer in the proposed zoo.
PUDUCHERRY: By the year-end, a mini zoo housing deer, peacocks, an emu, jackals, marine turtles and varieties of cat will come up on the premises of Forest Department office here. Enclosures for the animals and birds are being readied at a cost of Rs 30 lakh, a senior Forest department officer told The Hindu . The deer park coming up on 4000 sqft would have around 20 spotted deer, all captured three years ago and kept at the Villianur temple. The enclosure for them had been completed and the animals need only to be transported to the zoo, he said. Except for marine turtles and the emu, the other animals and birds are in the custody of the department. The four varieties of marine turtles such as Olive Ridley, green sea turtle, hawks bill and leather back would find a place in the zoo. The zoo will also have a snake park with vipers, cobras, pythons and kraits. The department was planning to set up a forest museum near the zoo with the help of National Museum, Delhi. The PWD has identified the site and construction will start soon, department sources said. The four-storied museum will have models of marine species, a collection of rocks and soil varieties.
