Convocation on Dec. 15

Staff Reporter

Clearance has been received from Governor

MADURAI : The 40th convocation of Madurai Kamaraj University will be held on December 15 to award degrees and medals to those graduates who passed out last academic year.

Following the clearance received from the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, the authorities have started preparations for the annual convocation and a Syndicate meeting in November will decide the choice of eminent names for conferment of honorary degrees.

Before the convocation, there will be a function to formally inaugurate the renovated Mu. Va. Arangu where the convocation takes place every year.

The Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said that the renovation work at Mu. Va. Hall taken up at a cost of nearly Rs.40 lakh had brought a fresh ambience and provided more comfort features in the huge auditorium.

However, as a future step, the university is planning to construct an exclusive convocation hall with 1,500-seat capacity at a cost of Rs.2 crore and steps to allot the required money have been initiated.

According to Mr. Maruthamuthu, the university has made a provision of Rs.1.4 crore in last year's budget and is now on the lookout for the remaining amount to take up the convocation hall project.

The meeting of the Academic Council will take place on October 26 to discuss issues relating to revised syllabus and get necessary approvals.

S. Shanmugiah, Registrar in-charge, said that new members who were elected from colleges to the Academic Council would attend their first meeting. In a press release on Monday, Mr. Shanmugiah said that the election of 15 members to the Senate from Registered Graduates Constituency would be held on November 19.

The election was originally scheduled for this month but was postponed due to the local body polls.
