UNDER THE KNIFE: Doctors removing the tumour at KIMS Hospital in Hubli
HUBLI: Doctors at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital here have removed a 35-kg tumour from a 50-year-old woman's abdomen. Paravva, from Rudrapur village of Ron taluk in Gadag district, who underwent the three-hour-long surgery, is now recuperating at the hospital. The tumour had been growing for a year, and she approached a local doctor, who referred the case to Kasturi V. Donimath, professor and unit chief, Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, KIMS Hospital. As Paravva, who had nobody to depend on and did not have the money required for the surgery, a team of junior doctors at KIMS Hospital Haseena, Anand, Sham and Bhimashankar decided to help her. They arranged for the blood required during the operation and also the fees to be paid for various tests.
Rapid growth
The doctors concluded that the tumour was growing rapidly and was pushing against the heart. They decided to operate immediately and the surgery was done on October 21. Dr. Donimath assisted by doctors Hemalatha, Chandrashekar and Seetharam a team of anaesthetists removed the tumour, which was rooted in the right ovary. The tumour weighed more than the patient herself, the doctors said.
