S.K. Saidapur is Vice-Chancellor

BANGALORE: Governor and Chancellor T.N. Chaturvedi on Tuesday appointed S.K. Saidapur, professor of zoology, Karnatak University, Dharwad, Vice-Chancellor of the university.

A Raj Bhavan notification said Prof. Saidapur would hold the post for four years or till he attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier.

M. Khajapeer retired as Vice-Chancellor on July 1, 2006. K.R. Aithal and A. Murigappa served as acting Vice-Chancellors before the new appointment was made. — Special Correspondent

Awards: Government facing a tough task

BANGALORE: Firm on restricting the number of Rajyotsava Awards to 50, the Government is finding it difficult to finalise the list of awardees.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has reportedly instructed the officials concerned to complete the formalities by Wednesday without giving room for confusion or controversy.

Many in the Government and several eminent people have objected to the names of awardees being "leaked" before the list, which is usually subjected to last-minute changes, is officially announced, sources said. — Staff Reporter

Task force for development

HUBLI: Minister for Major and Medium Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu has said that a task force will be constituted to chalk out an action plan for the industrial development of north Karnataka.

The Minister made this announcement during a meeting with industrialists and entrepreneurs of the region here on Monday, R.I. Kumbar, Joint Director of the District Industries Centre, said in a press release here on Tuesday.

The Minister also promised to provide government assistance for the industrial exhibition being conducted by industrialists in the district once in four years. He also gave an assurance that subsidy due to small-scale units would be released, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Farmers to stage rasta roko today

DHARWAD: Intensify their agitation, which entered the eighth day on Tuesday, members of the Rajya Pakshateeta Raitha Hitarakshana Kendra Samiti and the Pragatipara Raitha Horata Samiti have decided to stage rasta roko on Wednesday.

They have been urging the Government to revise the minimum support price for onion and are staging an indefinite dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here.

They are demanding a support price of Rs. 800, Rs. 700 and Rs. 500 for the three different grades of onion. — Staff Correspondent

`Chikungunya cases underreported'

Bangalore: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary T.V. Maruthi has criticised the State Government for what he described as its failure to control the spread of chikungunya and apprise the Union Government about the seriousness of the epidemic.

In a press release, Mr. Maruthi said that even though as many as 7.5 lakh people had been affected with chikungunya in the State, the Centre was led to believe that only 294 cases were reported.

He wanted the Health Department to take adequate steps to check the spread of the disease.

Two killed in road accidents

DAVANGERE: Rajashekar (40), a gram panchayat member of Elebetur, died in a road accident near Elebetur on Monday. The police said that Rajashekar had sustained serious injuries when the motorbike he was riding collided with a goods autorickshaw. He was shifted to a hospital, where he died. In another accident in which a truck and a goods autorickshaw collided near Bangari Gudda Cross, near Jagalur, one person died and four were injured. The deceased has been identified as Nagendrappa (30) of Bhyaranayakanahalli. The injured have been admitted to Chigateri General Hospital. — Staff Correspondent

Farmer ends life

HASSAN: H.G. Krishna Gowda (35) of Halekere village in Sakleshpur taluk allegedly ended his life by jumping into a small pond in his field on Monday night. According to a complaint filed by his brother Venkatesh with Sakleshpur Police, Krishna Gowda was unable to repay a loan of Rs. 50,000 he had taken from Vijaya Bank, Ballupet, to cultivate his five acres of land. Failure of coffee and ginger crops owing to excess rain had forced him to take the drastic step, it said. — Staff Correspondent

Dies in accident

HASSAN: Channakeshava (40) of Agraharadasarahalli, Bangalore, was killed when the car in which he was travelling rammed a roadside tree near Dandiganahalli gate on NH-48 on Tuesday morning. A case has been registered in this regard. — Staff Correspondent

Two arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have arrested two persons on charges of selling compact discs of pornographic films and recovered a computer system and CDs worth Rs. 25,000. The police have given the names of the victims as Santosh Dhariyappa Hejjegar and Yogesh Baburao Nikkam of Hubli. A case has been registered at Vidyanagar Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

Gutted

HUBLI: Study materials worth lakhs of rupees were gutted in a fire mishap at a commercial complex in Dharwad on Monday evening. According to fire brigade sources the mishap occurred because of a lamp, kept lit in the shop to mark Deepavali, accidentally fell down. The assessment of total loss is yet to be made. — Staff Correspondent

Accident

SIRSI: One person died on the spot and three others were injured when the tempo by which they were traveling collided with a NWRTC bus at Isloor Cross near here on Sunday. The deceased are yet to be identified. The injsured have been admitted to KIMS Hubli. The tempo was going from Sirsi to Hangal with thirteen passengers and the bus was on the way from Hubli to Sirsi. The case was registered in the Rural Police station here and investigations are on.

Dies of snake-bite

Sirsi: Diwakar Rama Naik (43) of Kallur village in Siddapur taluk died of a snake-bite on Monday. He was bitten while he was cutting grass near a paddy field. A case has been registered. — Correspondent

Death condoled

SIRSI: Uttara Kannada District Journalists Association has condoled the death of former vice-president of the association H.S. Yogesh of Haliyal who died on Sunday according to a release by the association president Subray Bhat Bakkal and secretary Pradeep Shetty on Tuesday. — Correspondent

Man attacked by bear

SIRSI: Dyamanna Ramanna Durmurgi was injured when a wild bear attacked him at Ajjalli forest on Monday. Dyamanna was a herdsman and returning from Ajjalli forest with cattle. He has been hospitalised at Mundgod. — Correspondent
