KANNUR: Coast Guard Deputy Commandant Deepak Singh discussed with district administration officials here on Tuesday the proposal for setting up a South Indian Marine Academy in the district. Mr. Singh also examined the prospects of a few places in the district for setting up of the proposed academy. Later, he held discussions with District Collector Ishita Roy at the Collectorate.
Rail infrastructure
An official press release here said that 53.04 acres of land at Kunnaru in Ramanthali near the Ezhimala Naval Academy site was the land identified as suitable for the proposed project. Proximity to the Naval Academy and the coastal area and the existing road and rail infrastructure were being cited as advantages of the site, the release said. The Coast Guard Academy project envisaged training of personnel for coastal protection and related activities. The proposed academy was the first such institution to be set up in south India, the release said adding that a report on the proposal for starting the academy here would be submitted to the Union Home Ministry on October 27. Revenue Divisional Officer K.V. Gangadharan, Deputy Collector P. Rajan and Tahsildar Raveendranath Cheleri were present during the discussion.
