Tombs damaged in Hassan

Staff Correspondent

It was an attempt to disturb communal peace, say police

HASSAN: Tension prevailed in Hunisikere area of the city on Tuesday morning, following news that tombs in a graveyard belonging to a particular community have been damaged.

The police said that miscreants had made a deliberate attempt to create communal tension.

On receiving the information, the district administration contacted leaders of the community. They were promised that the tombs would be repaired soon.

Meanwhile, leaders of the community took initiative in restoring calm by convincing the people that it was a "conspiracy" hatched by vested interest to disturb communal harmony and urged them not to succumb to the designs of anti-social elements.

Damaged

Superintendent of Police Panduranga H. Rane told presspersons that despite security arrangements, some had damaged the stone tablets attached to a few tombs, with the intention of disturbing communal harmony.

On learning about this, people started gathering near the graveyard.

Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat F.R. Jamaadar rushed to the spot and assured the community leaders that the tombs would be repaired. He appealed to them to act with restraint.

Based on a complaint filed by the community leaders later, the police registered a criminal case. Those responsible for the mischief would be arrested soon, he added.

`A model for others'

Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, who visited the place said that the community leaders had set a model for others on protecting communal harmony.
