All Central Govt. offices open today

NEW DELHI: Wednesday will be a working day in all Central Government administrative offices here in the Capital as they were closed on Tuesday on account of Id-ul-Fitr, a release issued by the Press Information Bureau said on Tuesday.

Srimad Andavan in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Sri Ranga Ramanuja Maha Desikan, better known as Srimad Andavan, Srimushnam, is here in the Capital up to November 5 staying at Sri Vaikuntanath Mandir on Sri Vedanta Desika Marg at Ber Sarai, (opposite JNU).

He arrived here on Monday from Rishikesh as part of a long Vijaya Yatra across North India. A daily programme has been arranged for devotees to receive the blessings of His Holiness: Paduka Aradhanam 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.; Samashrayanam and Bharanyasams 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Thiruvaradhanam and Tatheeyaradhanai 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

Srimad Andavan is an erudite scholar, master of many languages, specialist in sculpture, astrology and medicine and a renowned musician. He has established Veda Pathsalas at six centres with 300 students in all.

`White bread a cancer risk'

NEW DELHI: A diet rich in refined carbohydrates, especially white bread, is associated with an elevated risk of kidney cancer, according to Heart Care Foundation of India president K.K. Aggarwal.

Quoting from a study by the International Journal of Cancer, Dr. Aggarwal said consumption of bread increases the risk of cancer by 94 per cent, pasta and rice by 29 per cent and milk and yoghurt by 27 per cent.

"Whole wheat flour is better than wheat flour and wheat flour is better than `maida'," Dr. Aggarwal added.

Function marks first satellite launching

NEW DELHI: A gala function dedicated to the 49th anniversary of the First Satellite Launching and prize distribution among the winners of the Children's Painting and Dance Competition was held at the Russian Centre on Ferozeshah Road here on Tuesday.

Organised by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) and Nehru Bal Samiti, the function saw a multi-media presentation on different facets of Russian space science and the country's landmark achievements that have been beneficial to mankind. The presentation was made by Alexander E. Petrov, Head of RCSC Science and Technology Section.

A colourful dance show was presented by school children.
