HYDERABAD: A water tanker rammed into a pavement leaving one person dead and two others seriously injured at Musheerabad on Monday afternoon. With this, the number of road accidents involving water tankers rose to 29 in the city so far this year. While eight persons died, 23 others sustained injuries in these accidents.

The tanker was on hire with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board's Chilakalguda division to supply drinking water. Tension prevailed in the locality with angry locals demonstrating at the water board's office for more than four hours urging the police to take action against the board officials and the tanker owner.

Agitation

They called off the agitation after the board authorities assured to punish the tanker owner and driver. The accident occurred around 2.30 p.m. when the vehicle was coming from Bapujinagar to the water board's Chilakalguda office.

"According to eyewitnesses, the tanker driver tried to overtake a three-wheeler, but lost control," Musheerabad Sub-Inspector Pratap said. A painter Narad Muni Yadav, 50, who was standing beside a pan shop, was crushed to death.

Critically hurt

It knocked down a pedestrian Shashirekha, 50, and a mechanic Manmatha Rao, 28. Both were critically injured and shifted to the Gandhi Hospital. The tanker came to a halt only after hitting two bikes parked on roadside. Fearing backlash from the enraged public, the driver fled the spot.

Police found that it was cleaner Vikar, 22, who was driving the tanker. "He could not produce his driving licence," Central Zone DCP N. Madhusudhan Reddy said. The tanker's fitness certificate expired last month. Police took the tanker owner Anjaneyulu, driver Qaleel and cleaner Vikar into custody.
