BANGALORE: A six-day theatre festival, during which six Kannada plays in English translation will be staged, began at Ravindra Kalakshetra here on Tuesday.
Unique opportunity
Organised by the Karnataka Nataka Academy as part of the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, "Kannada Rangabhoomi Namaskara," provides an opportunity to non-Kannada audience to watch English version of some of the best Kannada plays. On the inaugural day, Artistes Repertory Theatre presented Girish Karnad's "Yayati," directed by Arundati Raja, who is also the coordinator of the festival.
The list
The other plays to be staged are: P. Lankesh's "Nanna Thangigondu Gandu Kodi," by Voices on October 25; Kuvempu's "Smashana Kurukshetra" by Bangalore Little Theatre on October 26; Sriranga's "Kattale Belaku," by Version One Dot Oh! on October 27; Chandarshekar Kambar's "Mahamayi" by Top Cast on October 28 and T.N. Seetharam's "Nammolagobba Naajukayya" by Vedike on October 29.
Future plans
In his introductory remarks, the Karnataka Nataka Academy Chairman Srinivasa G. Kappanna said the Academy had plans to hold similar festivals in Mumbai and Kolkata. Ms. Arundati Raja said they would try to make the theatre festival an annual event. Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture, I.M. Vittal Murthy and former bureaucrat Chiranjeev Singh spoke on the significance of holding such theatre events.
