Blood donation camp for dengue patients

NEW DELHI: A large number of Jawaharlal Nehru University students and staff members donated blood at a camp organised on the campus on Tuesday to augment blood supply in the Capital in the wake of increase in demand due to dengue.

Organised in two shifts at different venues inside the university campus, the camp received a good response as 120 students and staff members donated blood. "They will be issued donor cards within the next 15 days so that they can use the services of any blood bank for free," said Search Foundation chairman Dhiraj Kumar Singh.

Alleged suicide at Gujarat Bhavan

NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old telephone operator has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling in his accommodation at Gujarat Bhavan here. The tragedy came to light on Tuesday evening when his son returned from his native village.

According to the police, Shiv Kumar Verma, who was employed in Gujarat Bhavan, was found hanging in the staff quarters. It appeared that he had hanged himself a couple of days ago as his neighbours had complained of a foul smell emanating from his accommodation. Shiv Kumar's family had gone to his native village for the past few days.

As no suicide note was recovered from the spot, the Chanakyapuri police are questioning his son to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Three held for theft

NEW DELHI: Three persons, including two women, have been arrested by the South-West Delhi police for allegedly being in possession of cash that had been stolen by their relative. The prime accused, who is still at large, was a car driver working with a property dealer for the past 15 years.

According to the police, Satpal Rathi, a property dealer of Haryana, had lodged a complaint with the Najafgarh police that his driver, Babu Hassan, had fled with his Ford Ikon car in which Rs. 15 lakhs was kept on October 11 from his office in Najafgarh.

Following investigations, the police arrested Hassan's sister-in-law Naheed, his mother-in-law Mamoon Nesa and his wife's maternal uncle Gausula Ajam at their native place in Gopalganj, Bihar. The police recovered Rs. 2 lakhs in cash from the house of Naheed, Rs. 3 lakhs from the house of Mamoon Nesa and Rs. 6.4 lakhs from Gausula Ajam. The police suspect that the rest of the cash was with Hassan.

BHEL exhibition

NEW DELHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will showcase its technological capabilities at a three-day international exhibition-cum-conference, "Powergen India and Central Asia 2006", opening here on Wednesday.

According to a BHEL release, the event assumes significance as business in the Indian power sector indicates a high growth potential in the near future. Through pictorial displays of thermal and hydro power stations, combined cycle power plants and gas turbines, the company will display its capabilities in the power sector.
