dated October 26, 1956: Haile Selassie in Bombay

A warm and enthusiastic reception was accorded to His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, when he arrived at the Gateway of India in Bombay on the morning of October 25 on a three-week visit to India. In a brief speech, delivered after receiving the guard of honour, Emperor Haile Selassie expressed the hope that his visit to this country would result in closer understanding and "more effective collaboration between India and Ethiopia." The 64-year-old Emperor, wearing the uniform of a Field Marshal of the Ethiopian Army, drove to the Raj Bhavan in an open car.
