dated October 26, 1956: Air link with Tibet

An India-Tibet air link was established on October 24 when an Indian Air Force Ilyushin transport aircraft successfully completed its first trans-Himalayan flight. The first such flight by an IAF Dakota was made in 1954 when certain medicines were air-dropped near Gyantse. The Ilyushin, which has been christened "Meghdoot", was on a proving flight between India and Tibet across an uncharted route. While crossing the Himalayan hump, the aircraft flew over a number of peaks hitherto unsurveyed, some of them more than 24,000 feet above sea level.
